A parenting program based on the Hanen approach to improve social interaction skills in children with autism

Abstract

The current research aimed to identify the effectiveness of a guidance program for parents based on the Hanen approach in improving the social interaction skills of their children with autism spectrum disorder, following the experimental approach, with a quasi-experimental design, for one experimental group, which consisted of (10) parents of children with autism spectrum disorder enrolled in the Zahrat Al-Hayat Center for People with Disabilities. The research tools were represented in the list of social interaction skills for autistic children, the social interaction skills scale for autistic children, and the parents' guide to improving social interaction skills for autistic children at home. The results showed the effectiveness of the program. The effectiveness of a guidance program for parents based on the Hanen approach in improving the social interaction skills of their children with autism spectrum disorder, by calculating the difference between the average ranks of the results of the social interaction skills scale for autistic children in the pre- and post-applications. The difference was statistically significant at the level (0.01) in favor of the post-application in social interaction skills for autistic children, and the effect size was large. The research recommended a set of recommendations, including: paying attention to the autism category and encouraging parent training programs. He also presented a set of proposals in light of the results.
